Blood Type Releases Debut Mixtape

The talented breakout duo from Miami, Florida, calling themselves Blood Type, has recently released its first mixtape and can after 2 months already boast nearly 100,000 downloads. Their work has a fresh effervescence, as well as a familiar vibe. Blood Type excites with its edgy lyrics, while the undertones of neo-soul and jazz brilliantly finds the listeners’ comfort zone.

MIAliens is the breakout work that is bringing attention to the South Floridians whose initial goal was to show the music world that there was more to Southern Hip-Hop than had made its way to the air waves between the 1990s and the present. The name MIAliens is a reference to the 1996 album ATLiens, released by southern hip hop duo Outkast.RefinedHype.com writes, “Are these guys the next Outkast? No, but no one’s the next Outkast. Instead their something better, the next Blood Type.” Lyrical content had not reigned supreme in the genre till now, but Blood Type seeks to diversify what had been and bring Southern Hip-Hop to a new place. MIAliens comes not to change the genre, but to grow it, to expand it, and to expose new possibilities.

Blood Type’s resolve has at its foundation, a willingness to confront the hard topics that most mainstream rappers either avoid or merely do not find to be on their radar screens. To that end, Blood Type pushes the boundaries of songwriting by looking topics like religion and suicide in the face, and exposing the dark side of relationships and the individual weaknesses that sabotage true intimacy. The art of storytelling, once a staple in hip-hop music, is very much a dying art. MIAliens, most notably in the tracks This Ain’t Livin’ and Ronnie Romance, sets to breathe new life into an art form that is most definitely worth saving.

According to Ryan (a.k.a. Chief), “musically, Blood Type’s influences are classic albums like Aquemini, Illmatic and Ready to Die. We look to classic albums like those for musical inspiration.” Of his own personal style he adds, “I believe my sometimes brash, in-your-face style makes you remember Blood Type a little bit more than you would had I not been so direct.” Stephan (a.k.a. Stepson) admits to a smoother approach on the mic, but reports that the real work of the craft comes long before stepping into the studio. Stepson says, “Blood Type is about setting new precedents. After hearing one of our songs, the listener should have no question of what the song was about. We say what we mean, but do it in a way that brings a new creativity to song crafting. We choose ambitious beats that push our abilities. Blood Type intends to appear peerless.”

Though it is a new debut release, the tape has not disappointed critically.

Cyrus Rhodes of Indie Music Digest writes, “With over 70+ minutes of music it’s fully loaded and contains everything from deeply honest subject matter, hooky compositions, rap flows that are masterful, lyrics that are thought provoking, clever rhymes and rhythms, but more importantly a message that is deeply honest and personal.”

Hardcorejamz.com writes, “From the first listen on the lead single “Life is But a Dream” you feel like you have entered the good days of Hip-Hop again where club hits and southern dance rap was not as prevalent as it is today”.

The mixtape is available for free download on their Myspace profile. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates on upcoming gigs and new releases.
