Biography:
Already stirring an underground buzz
on both coasts, hip-hop artist Tippy is quickly
becoming one of the most unique and exuberant
artists to emerge in recent years. With her
raw old school sound, a combination of west
coast beats and east coast experience, Tippy
has made it no secret that she plans to take
the world by storm. Of course, such pomposity
is nothing new in the world of music, but never
before has such a candidate made such a mark.
Standing at 5’3”, Tippy’s
diminutive frame and pale, punk rock aesthetic
hides a surprisingly compelling hip-hop artist.
Tippy transforms herself on stage, emanating
an intoxicating sensuality, as daring and contagious
as her music itself. Seducing her audience with
a lyricism that seesaws between vulnerability
and sexual voracity, sweet flirtation and unabashed
craving, it’s no wonder Tippy has built
such a solid following with her recounts of
Cali streets, late rendezvous, and good love
gone bad.
Growing up in Los Angeles, Tippy’s talent
and skills emerged in the midst of and in response
to the rise of West Coast Gangsta Rap. Rejecting
trend and predictability, young Tippy was quick
to expand her horizons, exploring lyricists
and artists alike from Medusa and Hieroglyphics,
to Snoop. “When I first heard Doggystyle…it
was my revelation.” In high school she
began to free style and attend underground rap
shows frequently. While she appreciated and
was inspired by many of the artists around her,
such as, Depeche Mode and The Clash, Tippy was
far more intrigued by the groundbreaking sound
of the budding hip-hop scene. “My sound
is really a fusion of all the stuff I listened
to as a kid from Nas, Too Short and Lil’
Kim to Janice Joplin, Guns N’ Roses, and
The Police.” Though her influences were
expansive, it was the beat, emotion, and energy
of rap/hip hop artists that made a lasting impression.
After moving to New York City, armed with minimal
guitar skills, passion, and a feel for the human
condition, Tippy had a definite goal: to pioneer
a new realm of hip hop. Self-taught production
skills merge seamlessly with rhymes as innovative
as they are accessible. In her quest to bring
genres – and people – together,
Tippy has constructed throbbing, compelling
tracks guaranteed to stick.
Since emerging on the New York scene a mere
year and a half ago, Tippy not only has one
self-made album under her belt, but beyond that
she has over 100 tracks left in her arsenal.
Performing every weekend, she’s earned
a following of loyal fans and regular entrances
to some of New York’s most intimidating
crowds at The Delancey and Piano’s Bar.
As seen on TV, her work includes producing
tracks for The 2006 Winter Olympics and most
recently the release of her debut LP. Tippy’s
highly anticipated full-length album was released
on July 25th, 2006. Self-released and self-produced
Come Feel My Rhythm has but one mission, to
introduce the world to the anomaly that is Tippy.
And with over 100,000 plays on Myspace alone
(www.myspace.com/tippymusic), the buzz for the
album is continuously growing.
Stand out tracks like “Come Feel My Rhythm,”
highlight Tippy’s masterful, beat heavy
production skills and compelling carnality.
“Never” explores contradictions
of the heart, layering reflective guitar over
sizzling bass, with haunting, infectious vocals
that cements Tippy as one of the most provocative,
resourceful new artists on the scene. Honest,
brutal, and unbelievably captivating, Tippy
promises to fill the void in hip hop with a
necessary shot of originality.
